It’s such a peaceful line, closing a story with such violent undertones. Then the beautiful child was asleep and the moon was full. For example, take the closing line of one of his short stories, “A. Yet at the same time, he wrote some lines that were real pearls. ![]() Bukowski had a seeming antipathy towards women that I have a hard time getting past. I was just perusing the 1983 collection Tales of Ordinary Madness (originally published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1972). I’m of two minds about Bukowski: I like some of his poetry, but his short stories sometimes get on my nerves because they are so filled with misogyny. It’s a Charles Bukowski kind of day by that I mean that it’s ordinary, but depressing in its ordinariness. On the other end of reading through the not-so Final Gambit of Avery Kylie Grambs, I can’t say the final chapters satisfied me as much as they should have. I’ve spoken about my disagreements with the endings of some books before, such as Emiko Jean’s Tokyo Ever After and Tokyo Dreaming, or even VS Nelson’s The Archivist. While I had my misgivings with some of the direction that The Hawthorne Legacy took, I dove into Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ The Final Gambit with open arms. ![]() For me, capping off a book or a series is a very risky gamble for any author to pull off. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He is a member of English Scholars’ Association of Nigeria (ESAN) and Nigerian Pragmatics Association (NPrA).
